Ever watched a show where a single character’s backstory made you ugly-cry at 2 AM? That’s the raw power of fullmetal alchemist characters.
Hiromu Arakawa, who wrote fullmetal alchemist manga starting in 2001, built a world so emotionally devastating that fans still dissect it over two decades later. Whether you discovered fullmetal alchemist Brotherhood on a streaming binge or caught the original fullmetal alchemist 2003 run on late-night TV, the characters are the real reason this franchise refuses to fade.
This guide breaks down the most unforgettable fullmetal alchemist characters, settles the fullmetal alchemist or Brotherhood debate once and for all, and shows you exactly where to watch fullmetal alchemist right now.
The Elric Brothers: Beating Heart of Fullmetal Alchemist
Edward and Alphonse Elric carry the entire emotional weight of the fullmetal alchemist story. Edward, the foul-mouthed teenage State Alchemist, sacrificed his right arm and left leg in a forbidden human transmutation to resurrect their dead mother.
Alphonse lost his entire physical body in that same ritual. His soul now clings to a hulking suit of medieval armor, creating one of the most heartbreaking visuals in anime history. Their desperate bond drives every single episode across the fullmetal alchemist Brotherhood episode list.
What makes these fullmetal alchemist characters so magnetic is their absolute refusal to surrender. Edward’s golden automail limbs aren’t just cool design choices — they’re permanent, painful reminders of his worst mistake. Fans who get a fullmetal alchemist tattoo almost always choose the Flamel symbol or Edward’s crimson coat for exactly this emotional reason.
Roy Mustang and Riza Hawkeye: Fire Meets Unbreakable Loyalty
Colonel Roy Mustang openly dreams of becoming Führer of Amestris, but his burning ambition masks crushing guilt from the Ishvalan Civil War. His flame alchemy gloves make him one of the most lethal fullmetal alchemist characters in any combat sequence you’ll ever watch.
Lieutenant Riza Hawkeye stands at his side as both elite sniper and moral anchor. Their quiet, unspoken trust is the most powerful relationship buried inside the fullmetal alchemist Brotherhood episode list. You never need a dramatic love confession to feel how deeply they’d sacrifice everything for each other.
The Homunculi: Lust, Envy, and Calculated Evil
No breakdown of fullmetal alchemist characters is complete without the seven homunculi, each named after a deadly sin. Lust fullmetal alchemist fans remember best is the “Ultimate Spear” wielder whose icy elegance hides terrifying, merciless cruelty beneath every smile.
Envy fullmetal alchemist viewers love to despise is a shapeshifter consumed by bitter jealousy of human connection. The gut-punch reveal of Envy’s true parasitic form in fullmetal alchemist Brotherhood remains one of the most shocking twists in modern anime storytelling.
These villains elevate the fullmetal alchemist manga far beyond a simple shonen adventure. They force you to confront uncomfortable questions about identity, mortality, and what it genuinely means to be human when you strip everything else away.
Winry Rockbell: The Unsung Hero of Fullmetal Alchemist
Winry often gets overlooked in discussions about fullmetal alchemist characters, which is a massive mistake. She’s the childhood friend and automail mechanic who literally keeps Edward fighting by rebuilding his mechanical limbs after every brutal battle.
Her emotional breakdown in fullmetal alchemist Brotherhood — the scene where she points a gun at the person who murdered her parents — is arguably the most powerful moment in the entire series. Winry proves that real strength in the fullmetal alchemist universe doesn’t require alchemy at all.
Fullmetal Alchemist or Brotherhood: Which Version Wins?
This question splits the fandom down the middle. The original fullmetal alchemist 2003 anime diverged sharply from the manga around episode 25, creating unique character arcs and a darker, more philosophical ending you won’t find anywhere else.
Fullmetal alchemist Brotherhood follows Arakawa’s manga faithfully from start to finish, giving characters like Ling Yao and Olivier Armstrong significantly more screen time. If you keep asking is fullmetal alchemist Brotherhood a sequel, the short answer is no — it’s a complete, more faithful retelling.
| Feature | Fullmetal Alchemist 2003 | Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood |
| Total Episodes | 51 | 64 |
| Manga Faithful | No (diverges mid-story) | Yes (complete adaptation) |
| Overall Tone | Darker, introspective | Action-heavy, expansive |
| Best Suited For | Emotional depth lovers | Shonen adventure fans |
| Streaming Home | Crunchyroll, Hulu | Crunchyroll, Netflix |
The numbers tell a clear story: Brotherhood delivers more fullmetal alchemist characters and a tighter overall plot, but the 2003 version hits harder emotionally for many longtime fans who grew up with it.
Where to Watch Fullmetal Alchemist in 2025

- Crunchyroll streams both fullmetal alchemist 2003 and fullmetal alchemist Brotherhood with subs and dubs.
- Netflix carries fullmetal alchemist Brotherhood in most global regions, though exact availability depends on your country.
- Hulu offers the original fullmetal alchemist 2003 where to watch option for US-based subscribers.

The Real Reason These Characters Never Get Old
Fullmetal alchemist characters still dominate anime conversations because Hiromu Arakawa wrote real people, not cardboard archetypes. Every homunculus, every soldier, every grieving civilian carries authentic pain and stubborn hope that hits differently every time you rewatch.
Start with Brotherhood if you want the definitive ride. Circle back to 2003 when you crave something darker and more intimate. Either way, these characters will live in your head rent-free long after the final credits roll.
